It is said that the principles of the laser ware set in 1916 by Albert Einstein himself, by an evaluation of the consequences of Max Planck's radiation law and by introducing the concepts of spontaneous emissions and stimulated emissions. These theoretical results were forgotten, however, until the Second World War because Einstein did not have time to develop a good theory.

In 1953, the American physicist Charles Townes and, independently, Nikolay Basov and Aleksandr Prokhorov from the Soviet Union succeeded in producing the first maser which was a device similar to a laser, but which emitted microwaves instead of laser radiation. For these good results, the three scientists were rewarded with the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1964.

From the point of view of the danger which is posed by the laser beam on humans (mainly, when it comes to the eyes and skin), the lasers are classified into four classes. Currently the laser classification is not the same in all countries, but people are interested in making these classes to be defined in an internationally way.
